Fools Gold Enduro by Curt Backhaus:
Well Mike Fallon, Frank Leonardi, and me (Curt Backhaus) made it out to the May Ride of the Month, the Fools Gold Enduro held at the Georgetown/Rock Creek OHV area. Mike and Frank were on the second B minute and I was on the third C minute. It was a long (90+ miles), tough, and dusty race.
Mike had another really good ride and trophied with his 5th place finish in the B Vet class. Frank was staying with Mike through the first two loops, but said he hit the wall in the last loop due to not riding much this year and fell off the pace. I had a pretty good first loop, but just a few miles into the second loop I threw my chain. I was able to fix it, but it cost me a good 15 minutes that ruined my score on the second loop since some of that time just kept carrying over. The third loop was pretty tough, but at least I was finally back on time at the beginning of it. My one saving grace is that I'm in the REALLY OLD AND SLOW CLASS now, so I still finished 3rd in my class which was good enough for a trophy.
CERA put together a great course using most of the regular trails, and several event only trails. It was pretty dusty, especially on the road sections where logging is taking place, but most of the trails weren't too bad. This was a true timekeeping enduro and is one of my favorites every year. With it being so close for most of us we really should have a better club turnout for this event.
